Reuse your Decorations

Reuse by finding used things around the house, use them as decor to start with and then add to that. Use your kids footballs or borrow from a neighbor rather than just buying them for a one time use. If you do buy them only for the party, donate them after to a children’s charity. Same things goes with team jerseys , pennants, or anything else you may buy to use as decor for this one time event. It is unlikely that the same two trams will play each other next year, so donate anything you can. I like to use real decor items like real footballs, hang real team pennants and jerseys when I decorate for a Super Bowl party… I am a fan of decor that is real rather than those paper cut out items that are sold at a party store… they may cost a little more, but they do not end up in the trash as often and can be reused.

Here are a few simple considerations in How to Host a “Green” Super Bowl Party provided by the Super Bowl Host Committee’s 1st & Green Initiative.  

Thinking of throwing the annual Super Bowl party? Why not make this year a “green” gathering? With the help of the Super Bowl Host Committee’s 1st & Green initiative and a few tweaks to your party plans, you can throw an environmentally friendly super football celebration! Don’t be daunted by going green. Hosting a green party is simple and allows you the freedom to be creative with your ideas.

1. Super Invitations

Email invitations instead of mailing them to save not only the environment but also some of your green! You can send invites through Eco-friendly Party™, Facebook, Evite, or other web sites that provide free email-based party invitations in many styles, themes and colors. You will automatically be sent the RSVP list and will be able to see up-to-date attendees. Once you have the guest list, encourage guests to carpool to the party!

2. Super Essential Utensils

Ideally, use your own plates, glasses, and utensils for the party and wash them in the dishwasher with the air-dry cycle. If your guest list is too large for this option, simply buy serveware that is recyclable plastic #1-7 (be sure to rinse and recycle the plastic) or if you have a compost pile consider using compostable plates and utensils! Don’t forget the cloth napkins in your favorite team colors!

3. Super Decorations

Get creative but keep the decorations simple! Use items that you already have and whenever possible use recyclable materials. Save your decorations to use next year or donate to your local classrooms for teachers’ reuse. Replace the lights in your house with fluorescence bulbs and you will use 50-70% less energy while watching the game and still perform through next year’s party! For even greater energy efficiency, consider turning out your lights during the game or half-time show to provide a concert-like atmosphere.

The 2012 Super Bowl will also recycle its promotional banners and decorations after the Big Game. Indianapolis already recycled acres of the old RCA Dome fabric into patio/shelter covers for local parks, art projects and ongoing creative collaboration. 4. Super Food

Instead of just buying bags of dull chips, create a natural spread of local fruits and veggies with a homemade organic dip! Visit the local vendors in your town and buy locally made products, minimizing product transportation AND your carbon footprint with the table spread! If you serve beer, consider a keg (or half-keg or pony keg) to minimize waste from bottles and cans. Utilizing 2-liter bottles of soda or tap water also minimizes individual serving containers. Rent a keg !

5. Super Clean up

Designate a recycling quarterback and receivers! Set out a container for trash AND a second labeled for recyclable materials such as cans and bottles. Appoint a guest as recycling QB to encourage everyone to sort! If you don’t have city-wide recycling, research recycling drop offs near you, such as grocery stores, schools or other convenient locations. Wash dishes and utensils with phosphorous-free detergent (available for your sink and dishwasher).

What to do about leftovers and cooking scraps? Add to your compose pile or start composting with an inexpensive home composter purchased at your local hardware store! If you hired a caterer, consider donating unserved leftovers to food pantries or food bank training programs such as Second Helpings  whose employee train for food industry positions while reusing donated food from local restaurants and events.

Indianapolis has already coordinated recycling efforts not only in Lucas Oil Stadium and the Super Bowl Village, but also with downtown restaurants and vendors. New food composting programs and food donation efforts also anticipate to manage more leftovers than any previous major event in Indianapolis.

Asian Hummus Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 cup plain hummus
• 2 Tbsp. San-J Thai Peanut Sauce
• 1 Tbsp. chopped peanuts
• 1 Tbsp. chopped green onions

 Preparation

Using a fork, combine hummus and San-J Thai Peanut Sauce. Transfer to a serving bowl. Sprinkle the top with chopped peanuts and green onions for garnish.
